A practical conversation about making better people decisions using evidence and validated tools.

Assessment Centers, Psychometric Assessments and Leadership Development – Podcast with Marius Barbu

How Can We Make Better Decisions About People?

Hiring, promoting and developing people are among the most important decisions any organisation makes. Yet, in many cases, these decisions are still based primarily on interviews, intuition and previous experience.

Recently, I had the pleasure of joining Răzvan Radu on the Discuții Humano podcast to discuss how organisations can make more objective and better-informed talent decisions by combining structured interviews, psychometric assessments and business simulations.

Throughout the conversation, we explored practical examples from recruitment, leadership development and executive assessment, explaining why no single assessment method should ever be used in isolation.

Why Interviews Alone Are Not Enough

Traditional interviews remain one of the most common selection methods, yet they often provide only a partial picture of a candidate.

Interviews can evaluate communication, motivation and professional experience, but they are less effective at measuring behavioural tendencies, cognitive preferences or long-term leadership potential.

For this reason, organisations increasingly combine interviews with objective assessment methods that provide additional evidence for decision making.

Combining Different Assessment Methods

One of the key ideas discussed during the podcast is that better hiring and promotion decisions come from combining multiple assessment methods rather than relying on a single source of information.

Depending on the role and organisational context, this may include:

  • Structured behavioural interviews
  • Psychometric assessments
  • Assessment & Development Centers
  • Business simulations
  • 360° Feedback
  • Leadership assessments

Each method contributes different insights, allowing organisations to understand not only what a person has achieved in the past, but also how they are likely to perform in future roles.

Potential Is Different From Demonstrated Performance

One of the most common mistakes organisations make is assuming that today’s top performer will automatically become tomorrow’s successful leader.

High performance in a specialist role does not necessarily predict success in leadership positions.

Leadership requires additional capabilities such as strategic thinking, decision-making under pressure, influencing others, adaptability, resilience and the ability to develop people.

This is precisely why assessing potential has become an essential part of succession planning and leadership development.

Business Simulations Bring Assessments Closer to Reality

Assessment Centers and Development Centers allow participants to demonstrate how they think, prioritise, communicate and make decisions in realistic business situations.

Rather than asking hypothetical questions, organisations can observe actual behaviours through business simulations, role plays, presentations, inbox exercises and group discussions.

Combined with psychometric assessments, these simulations provide a far richer and more objective picture of individual capability and future potential.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is beginning to transform many aspects of talent assessment.

However, AI should support decision-makers—not replace them.

Technology can help process information, identify patterns and improve efficiency, but human judgement, professional expertise and organisational context remain essential when making important decisions about people.

Key Takeaways

  • No single assessment method provides all the answers.
  • Combining interviews, psychometric assessments and business simulations improves decision quality.
  • Potential and demonstrated performance are not the same.
  • Assessment Centers provide valuable behavioural evidence that interviews alone cannot capture.
  • Objective assessment methods help organisations reduce bias and improve leadership decisions.
